NAME French urns with Arkansas quartz clusters
TYPE Antique Parisian urns with American crystals
SIZE

Urns: 23" tall, 26" diameter
approx. 400 pounds each
Crystals:24" tall
96 pounds and 124 pounds each

DESCRIPTION This pair of "Second Empire" Louis Napoleon III architectural marble urns was created in the style of Louis XVI, in Paris during the 1860's. Each urn is turned from a solid block of "Griotte Uni" red marble, mined in the Pyrenees Mountains of Southern France. The urns are appointed with the finest quality gold vermeil bronze mounts, in the configuration of paired ram heads, with drapery and tassel elements. These urns represent the epitome of quality in both materials and workmanship, typifying the world standard of excellence established by Paris craftsmen in the mid nineteenth century. These urns, intended for a palatial architectural setting, take direct design inspiration from the reign of Louis XVI and the "Versailles Grand Style." For the last quarter century, the urns were artistic components of one of San Francisco's most elegant private penthouse residences. The estimated weight of each urn is 400 pounds. Each urn is approximately 26" in diameter and 23" tall. The bronze bases were fitted in the 1930's with concealed rollers containing ball bearings, for ease of movement on stone or smooth floors. The urns are currently accessorized with pristine rock crystal groupings from America. The left urn in the picture contains a 96-pound "cluster", while the other grouping weighs 124 pounds. Only 3 or 4 pairs of similar urns were originally crafted, due to the limited availability of appropriate marble blocks from the Pyrenees mining location. It is currently unknown whether the similar pairs survived to the present time.
